Why is it that shadows have this kind of amazing effect on us? I have been thinking about this question a lot, and when I wrote Saboteur, I was questioning this more. Shadows are a common feature in nature, insect wings being a notable example. Regardless of the method used, they are always at a distance away. Shadows are almost everywhere we go, and no matter how fast we run, we can never escape from them. Isn’t that strange?
In Saboteur, the characters constantly follow shadows. They manage to leave the path that brings them closer to the truth behind but are only able to feel that it moves further away. Every time they believe they’re getting close, another dynamic arises to bring them back to the starting point. They remain persistent in moving forward, following the shadow of truth, yet the solution seems always to be farther ahead. That fascinating chase, with no guarantee that they would ever get what they want, is what makes the story so great.
I’ve always connected to the characters who have a dream or an achievement and are in a constant search for something they can’t get. My captivation was brought about by the trials of characters who are on a quest, the results throughout which are almost so close and feasible. But I have to admit this. You can’t look back and complain when, after chasing the shadow, you suddenly see the things that are right before your eyes.
This is a universal thing, we all do, don’t we?
We tend to concentrate only on solving problems and finding answers and have no appreciation for what we have done. The people in Saboteur are self-absorbed so much in the pursuit that they lose their core personalities in the process. They think that the truth will give them a peaceful mind, yet the matter is probably much closer than they think.
Well, I’m pretty sure that’s not all you have been through, so you might be… right?
It is quite common to get overly concerned seeking out answers to questions whose complete significance we are not aware of. We are running after ghosts, believing they might point us in the direction of a particular destination, but sometimes, we realize that the path we walked can metamorphose us in a way we couldn’t have even expected. And the answers don’t give us the satisfaction that our mind hopes.
That’s exactly what happens in Saboteur. The characters are chasing the truth, but the more they dig, the more they realize they might be looking in the wrong direction. In the end, they learn something bigger than the answer they were chasing. They learn that some things can’t be found by chasing them—they have to be discovered by looking at what’s already around them.
So, if you are ready to plunge into this chase, which is absolutely fascinating, come along with me. Let us solve the puzzle and find our way. Possibly, it could help you find out something quite unexpected about yourself.
